I'm Joan, and I'm a postdoctoral researcher at the Yale Perception and Cognition Lab. The raw material of perception is a continuous wash of light and sound, but what we experience are discrete *individuals* — objects and events. I am broadly interested in how discrete object and event representations interact with forms of perception and cognition, and in how they can be so fundamental that we *hallucinate* them even when there are no cues to objects or events whatsoever. I hail from the Philippines, and spent my childhood in Canada. I used to competitively dance.
